Monkey vs Mortimer

Turning the respawns off.

Never really was a cool kid

Sci-fi is a really bizarre genre of entertainment, no matter what form it takes. It’s usually really, really bad. Laughably bad. The people who like it are huge nerds. Laughable nerds. But then there is stuff that is just so freakin good. Battlestar Galactica and Lost strike me as current sci-fi that is absolutely amazing.

I wasn’t much a star trek fan as a kid. I mean, I guess I remember watching a few of the movies (the whale one in particular) but it didn’t really stick. I was a Star Wars kid, in fact I kinda was THE star wars kid. I loved it.

In my teen years though I got really into Star Trek: The Next Generation. The episodes challenged me in a way that television never really had before. It made me think about concepts like “the greater good” and all sorts of diplomatic reasoning. I loved it.

I have a friend who is a hardcore Trekker, actually I guess most of us are of varying degrees, but this dude LOVED all Trek. And while he was a huge fan of TNG his heart belonged to Captain Kirk and the original USS Enterprise. His love for this was contagious and I watched nearly episode with him over the course of several years (including a year + when I lived on his couch – thanks Dave!!). Now, the original series is funny, usually intended – sometimes not, but it also was pretty revolutionary and once you get into the world (ie the bad cardboard sets) it was pretty moving and also confronted some of the larger issues from it’s day.

For years my whole group of friends would bicker back and forth on who was the better captain. Sometimes someone would show up with a wildcard but the other captains never mattered, it was Kirk Vs Picard.

As the internet grew we realized we weren’t the only nerds sitting around drinking beer and talking about such an absurd thing. There are webpages dedicated to each and humor about both. The argument is almost cliched at this point, except it’s too damn important!

Kirk was a cowboy, flying by the seat of his pants, punching dudes out, romancing green ladies, having jungle fever. He just embodies awesomness. Picard was very heady and gutsy, he was a master negotiator who also had some inner demons to battle… and he was so aloof to women that they fawned for him.

Man, I still don’t know where I stand on this and I was shocked to find out it wasn’t a HMB lens yet, so I made it. I linked to some funny stuff, but the page is pretty basic. This lens can totally take off with some truly awesome and hysterical responses though if people are willing to answer the most important question of this and every generation. Who is better, Kirk or Picard?

And yes, I made the HMB url KirkVsSpock, because i’m really, really dumb. I’m also gonna blame my meds. Stupid meds keepin me all sane and stuff!
